Competing hypotheses
Origin: Lat. competentĭa, hypothĕsis, gr. ὑπόθεσις
Because humans have difficulty making decisions in conditions of uncertainty, and cling to biases, Richards Heuer, Jr. advocated methods that weigh a set of hypotheses against a collection of evidence that works to confirm or refute them, leaving the more or most plausible of them.
