Laser technology
Origin: Ingl. laser, Gr. τεχνολογία
Acronym of "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation". An optical beam of essentially monochromatic (single frequency) energy in the visible spectrum or beyond, from ultraviolet to infrared. The energy produced by lasers varies widely from very low energy solid state devices to chemical lasers in the megawatt range. Applications vary widely and include directed energy weapons as well as non-lethal weapons designed to blind, interferometry, holography, spectroscopy, barcode scanning, engraving, lithography, and many others. Because laser energy is essentially monochromatic it can be precisely focused. It is coherent in space and time.
