Boolean Logic/Boole Technique

A logic system used in mathematics that “combines propositions with the logical operators AND OR and IF THEN and EXCEPT and NOT. (Wordnet) Boolean concepts are also used in the design of networks, digital circuits, and computers. Using Boolean operators, statements can be evaluated as being true or false (the 1 and 0 of digital circuits) thus the state of circuit can be represented symbolically. Boolean logic derives its name from George Boole who, in the mid 19th century, first devised this system of logic and notation. Boolean logic is used in electronics, computers, and software. In 1938, Claude Shannon showed how relay circuits could be used to channel the flow of electricity or information in "and- or" Boolean-like circuits. Transistors and linear circuits involved in digital processing soon replaced the relays, but the Boolean logic remained an important structure in electronics design.
