Decision matrix
Origin: Lat. decisĭo, -ōnis matrix, -īcis
A tool used in decision-making and decision modeling for determining the best choice among competing choices in an array of options, e.g., plans, products, strategies, candidates, etc. The tool is based on utility theory from the field of systems analysis. In utility theory, a rational decision maker selects an alternative product, policy, or action that best meets his or her criteria for success. A decision matrix usually displays the decision criteria in the columns and alternative decisions in the rows. The cells contain judgments showing how well each alternative meets each criterion. The alternatives can then be "scored" by taking weighted sums in each of the rows. The alternative with the highest score is then taken to be the best choice because it comes closest to simultaneously meeting all of the criteria. The score is analogous to the expected utility of the alternative.
