Extending a trend into the future by assuming the variables will continue to behave as they have in the past. It is a forecasting procedure that consists of prolonging in the long term, implicitly or explicitly, the observed trends. It is defined as the operation that estimates the value of a function by means of a value of the variable taken outside the interval in which the relation has settled down. It is extending a curve into the future by assuming the variables will continue to behave as they have in the past. It is the process of constructing new data points outside a discrete set of known data points. It is similar to the process of interpolation, which constructs new points between known points, but its results are often less meaningful, and are subject to greater uncertainty. Extrapolation is based on the assumption that trend behavior will remain the same in the future as in the past. Changes and discontinuities are not integrated in the extrapolation model.
